Flutessence REPERTOIRE
The Flute Quartet Repertoire

Music composed specifically for an ensemble of 4 flutes
is relatively rare. A few compositions from the Baroque
era were written for multiple flutes (eg. Boismortier's 6
Concertos for 5 flutes, and Molter's Concerto for 4 flutes
and Continuo), however the flute was then more often
used as a solo instrument in chamber music, together
with strings and basso continuo.

The Flute quartets of Haydn and Mozart consisted of
parts for flute, violin, viola and bass, though at that time
there were some composers, such as Carl von
Dittersdorf and Gianella, who each wrote a piece for a
quartet of 4 flutes. The Romantic period gave rise to
several more pieces for this combination of instruments,
notably written by flautists themselves such as
Briccialdi, Furstenau and Soussmann, amongst others.

At the beginning of the 20th Century the popularity of the
flute increased and many compositions for the
instrument resulted, including some fine works for 4
flutes written by French composers such as Berthomieu,
Bozza, Casterede, Damase, Dubois and Guiot.

We are pleased to include some of these great works in
our repertoire and also some equally exciting pieces by
living composers such as Catherine McMichael, Gary
Schocker and GregoryYasinitsky from the USA, and Ian
Clarke, Cecilia McDowall and Mike Mower from the UK.
